Is this pasta sauce out of date?

i got a homepride pasta bake sauce the other week, the one u mix with pasta then put in the oven. I put it in the cupboard coz it said only put it in the fridge when open, i checked it today & noticed the date said May 12. & i dont know if it means 2012 or may 12th, so im not sure if its out of date or not coz its june now. I checked other foods & some say 2012 & others say the month.
