I hate my kitchen, it's so dark with dark brown wooden cupboards everywhere, can I paint the wood or not?

It makes the kitchen feel so dull and dark, I can't afford to have new cupboards and everything I could replace the doors but they have draws on top too... Is there a certain kind of paint I can use so i can paint wood??? Thanks
